Designer tassen als investering: feit of fabel?

Designer bags as an investment: fact or fiction?

Anyone who has ever bought a vintage Chanel, Louis Vuitton, or Gucci bag has likely heard it before: "Designer bags are an investment." But is that actually true? Can you really compare a designer bag to stocks or real estate, or is it primarily a clever marketing term?

The honest answer? A bit of both.

Not every designer bag increases in value

Let’s clear up a common misconception right away: not every designer bag automatically rises in value. Just as not every car becomes a classic, the same applies to designer bags.

Especially models that:

  • are timeless,
  • are globally recognizable,
  • are no longer in production,
  • or remain popular for years,

have the greatest chance of retaining their value well.

Some models are true icons

Certain bags have been beloved for decades and remain sought after by collectors and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Think, for example, of:

  • Louis Vuitton Speedy
  • Chanel Classic Flap Bag
  • Chanel Diana Bag
  • Gucci Jackie
  • Louis Vuitton Alma
  • Fendi Baguette

These models have stood the test of time and are still worn and sought after today.

Why are more and more people choosing vintage?

New designer bags become more expensive almost every year. As a result, the demand for authentic vintage pieces continues to grow.

Many buyers discover that for the same budget, they can:

  • buy a rare vintage model;
  • find better materials;
  • or acquire a bag that is no longer available in stores.

Additionally, a vintage bag offers something new ones simply cannot: character.

Condition remains important

A bag may be highly desirable, but its condition plays a major role in its value.

Important points include:

  • the general state of the leather or canvas;
  • the quality of the hardware;
  • the presence of serial numbers or date codes;
  • original accessories like dust bags or authenticity cards.

However, this does not mean that a vintage bag has to be perfect. Slight signs of wear are part and parcel of an authentic pre-loved item.

Above all, buy what you love

Perhaps the most important advice: never buy a designer bag solely as an investment.

The greatest value often lies in the enjoyment you get from it. A bag that is worn with love for years and subsequently still has a good residual value is ultimately much more valuable than a bag that disappears unused into a closet.

So: fact or fiction?

Designer bags as an investment are not a myth, but they are not a guarantee either. Some iconic models retain their value surprisingly well and can even appreciate. Still, it remains wise to buy a bag primarily because you are in love with it.

Consider value retention a nice bonus.

Because let's be honest: a bag you use with pleasure for years and which largely retains its value is perhaps the most enjoyable investment there is.
